MAJOR MEDICAL FUND

As mission teams and our staff in Uganda meet more and more children, they often find cases where emergency medical intervention is necessary. Donations to the Major Medical Fund help us address these needs as they are discovered.

Jonathan
Jonathan has been suffering from leg and back pain for some time. The Hearts & Hope Primary Sponsorship Coordinator, Mariah, made arrangements to take Jonathan to a local doctor. According to the results of his x-ray, it seems two of the bones in his leg are not growing properly and surgery is needed. With walking being most of the country's sole mode of transportation, it is important that Jonathan receive this surgery to allow him to be a contributing member of the community.

Frank
You may recognize Frank; Hearts & Hope helped him have surgery a year ago. Frank is suffering from chronic osteomyelitis, or a prolonged bone infection. He had been showing more signs of the infection for several months, including pain, difficulty walking, and infected abscesses of the overlying skin. The previous surgery removed a lot of the infection, but doctors recently found it has not completely healed and more surgery is necessary.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP!
Moses has received the treatment he needed and is doing great!

Moses needs your help! He has lived with this mass on his neck for a long time and it is getting larger.

Our staff in Uganda has managed to get him on a list at a hospital where there are doctors who can perform the surgery to remove the mass. But they need $750 to cover the expenses before the doctors will move forward. Those funds will cover anesthesia, medicine, food for his mother, and all tests required to prepare him for surgery.

We would love to get him on the list this week.  Thank you for considering even a small donation!

Surgery for Frank Kalulu

Frank Kalulu is a bright, young boy who lives in the village of Kamuli. Over two years ago, he suffered an injury to his leg that has never healed properly. During our recent visit, a doctor determined that Frank has Osteomyelitis and required surgery to give him any chance of walking on his leg again.

Osteomyelitis is an infection of the bone. Bacteria can infect the bone through the blood or by spreading from nearby infected tissue or an open wound. If the infected bone is not treated adequately, the blood flow to the bone is decreased and part of the bone may die. This makes the infection very difficult to treat, as antibiotics are unable to reach the infection in the dead bone to kill the bacteria. Therefore, surgery is often necessary to remove pieces of dead bone. This is followed by a hospitalization for IV antibiotics for a few weeks.

This is the plan in Frank’s case. He underwent surgery to remove the dead parts of his femur, or thigh, bone. He will be in the hospital for a few weeks to receive antibiotics to fight the infection. He may even require further surgeries if more dead bone is found.

Frank was suffering from chronic osteomyelitis, or a prolonged bone infection. He had been showing signs of the infection for several months, including pain, difficulty walking, and infected abscesses of the overlying skin.

Unfortunately, the infection in Frank’s femur did extensive damage to the bone and to the hip joint. He also has a risk of recurrent infections of the bone after he has been treated. Because of the damage his bone and joint sustained, Frank will be unlikely to ever walk completely normally again. However, treatment with surgery and antibiotics, with close follow up, will allow him to have much less pain and live a more normal life.

Past  Efforts - Surgery for Jacillan Nandhego

Jacillan is one of our first sponsored students in the village of Kamuli.  On a recent trip, we found that Jacillan was having difficulty breathing.  Jacillan's tonsils have grown rapidly over the past few months and they are now beginning to obstruct her throat and a tonsillectomy is required.

We raised funds to cover the costs of the surgery, medication, transportation, and post-surgery care.

THANK YOU!!!

Past Efforts - Ashraf & William

THANK YOU!!!!

Hearts & Hope has raised $4,500 to pay for multiple surgeries for two boys that we recently met on our trips to Uganda.  Learn about their situations below and thank you for your generous support!
  • Ashraf Woira - Bladder Surgery:  $1,100
  • William Ssekenyazi - 2 Lower Abdominal Surgeries: $3,400

Ashraf Woira

In November we met Ashraf Woira, a 7 year old boy in the village of Naminage, about 15 minutes east of Kamuli.  He was born with a portion of his bladder outside of his body and has lived with this condition his entire life.

We happened to visit Naminage on this trip to view the drilling of a borehole well there and his mother immediately came to us to ask for assistance.

Hearts & Hope is raising $1,085 to repair his bladder which will allow him to return to school and learn valuable skills he will need to have a productive life.

Your support will provide Ashraf with the much needed surgery which will allow him to attend school like any other normal boy.  In addition, it will give him the knowledge that someone cares for him.

William Ssekenyazi

In February, we met William Ssekenyazi during our visit to Nakabango.  He appeared to be like any normal 13 year old boy, but he hid a secret under his black coat - his lower intestine is exposed outside of his abdomen.

Due to his condition, his parents abandoned him in Kampala long ago and he's been unable to attend school consistently over the past few years.  Cared for by an older teenage girl, they've been praying for someone who could help with the cost of treatment for his condition.

William requires two surgeries which will cost $3,500.

Your support will provide him with the much needed surgery to fully repair his condition and enable him to attend school and become a productive member of society.  In addition, your support will give him the knowledge that others do indeed care about him and his future.
