With basic infrastructure in place, there are a number of opportunities to develop small businesses that support the village and the surrounding communities. Your donation can give the villages their start towards improving their local economy.
Nakabango Carpentry Shop
Carpentry Shop in Nakabango
The basic carpentry shop in the village of Nakabango (shown on the left) is able to perform basic carpentry operations. Unfortunately, the shop does not have electricity and all work is done using basic hand tools.
Due to the lack of power tools, the head carpenter must travel 45 minutes to the nearest town with a mill to purchase pre-milled wood.
Hearts & Hope is raising funds to install electricity to the carpentry shop and purchase multi-purpose carpentry equipment which will enable Nakabango to be the primary wood mill and carpentry center in the area. This will provide economic opportunity for the villagers and students of Nakabango and benefit the surrounding communities.
It is our plan that this carpentry shop will produce wooden desks and other materials for the school in Nakabango, the school in Kamuli, and the future school in Mbulamuti. Today, desks are prohibitively expensive, resulting in students often kneeling on the ground to use their benches as a desk. Completing the carpentry center will help to expand Hearts & Hope's reach by reducing the costs of these desks.
