It is difficult to grasp the dire situation in countries like Uganda.  

Many children must make a difficult choice each day:

• travel several miles to get clean water, risking abduction or abuse
• take a chance on the local water source - a ditch which may or may not make them sick, risking death from diarrhea.

In addition, time spent collecting clean water is time not spent in school, learning how to break the cycle of poverty.

Once an organization has committed to a long-term partnership with the village, Hearts & Hope addresses these basic needs of health, wellness, and education:

1. We purchase land in villages where there is no school.
2. We install a well on the school grounds, making the school a convenient source for clean water.
3. We build a multi-purpose building which can serve as a school building during the day and a community center in the evening.

Once the basic needs have been addressed, Hearts & Hope facilitates the continuing development of the village with the partnering organization.  This includes focusing on developing sustainable, small business enterprises which benefit the entire village.

Some examples of village development projects include:

• Commercial buildings - Sewing centers, carpentry shops, etc
  
• Power & electricity - Addressing basic lighting needs, power for carpentry shops, etc
• Agricultural Operations - Purchase of agricultural lands, building livestock buildings & infrastructure, etc.
• Health care facilities - Development of basic health care facilities
• Other buildings & infrastructure - As determined by needs & talents within the village
